Hi I thought it was time to introduce myself properly, my Name is Looby and i've had Psoriasis for as long as i can remember and can't really remember not having it somewhere on my person, for the last 16 years I've been on Methotrexate, sometimes tablets and sometimes the injections but my Dermatologist has just started me on Fumaderm and stopped my Methotrexate (eeeeeeekkkkkk) I am at the moment beginning to wonder if I have made the right decision? It's not so much the side effects it's that my P is raging out of control!! Can any of you fabulous forumers help? L x

Hi Looby thanks for coming back.
I'm no expert but I can tell you that Fumaderm is not a quick fix, in your last post you say you started on the tablets on the 1April this year so you are probably on the low strength Fumaderm initial.? I would think you are started on low doses to let your body adjust to the drug..
When you go on to full strength Fumaderm 120 mg they will probably have you on one morning and one evening. For a couple of weeks. You should begin then to see slight improvement the dose will be increased to whatever the dermatologist thinks fit.
With me at this time my plaques started to subside and then got steadily better

I think if you can stick with it. It should work . I really hope it does. Because it is so liberating to feel "normal"

Why did you come off methotrexate, had it stopped working ?

In my humble opinion I think you should persevere.......... I am hopeful you won't regret it.....
You have been on it less than a month and it is a slow working drug Thumb

Hello again Looby Wave

Have you made the right decision? My simple answer would be Definitely Thumb

My longer answer would be and it's just my opinion but 16 years on Methotrexate is far to long and it's an awful drug that should be dumped, there are many more treatments available these days and yes they do have side affects as all drugs do, but Methotrexate has to be the worst in my opinion. So get it flushed out of your system, and start again.

I can't say if Fumaderm will be better for you because we are all different, but some of our members have fantastic results from it. That said some also say Methotrexate is great, so it goes to prove what is good for one may not be for another.

I'm with Jim, give Fumaderm time. A new treatment can sometimes have wonderful results, but some can take their time to get going. But if at the end of the day Fumaderm is not for you there are other options, and I would say that your psoriasis is "raging out of control" because you are worried about changing from one treatment to another. But anything in my opinion is going to be better for you than the dreaded MTX (methotrexate) Scare

Regards.

Fred.

P.S As you have classed this as your proper intro, I have moved your other thread New to Fumaderm to Prescribed Treatments For Psoriasis so as not to confuse others. Especially those having to much red wine hey Jim. Big Grin

Yes Looby.
DMF, in the form of Fumaderm or other, is a slow burner. But you have a good chance that it might work.
Advantage is that the side effects are much more harmless than those of MTX, which is basically a poison.
Take your time, you may even need to gradually build up to 6x 120mg, then it should work and you can go down a bit. If that dose is still too little, there is an escape for the Dutch approach, but that is for later

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Looby,

You have a good chance of success if you can tough out the side effects in the short term. Having your drug with a meal helps minimise the tummy upsets, and if things get really tough a few skipped doses aren't disastrous. I started getting good results within six weeks. After nearly 18 months of treatment I have gone from over 30% plaque coverage to around 1% coverage with quiet plaques. A few ups and downs, but a worthwhile journey.

Cheers,

Bill

Hi Looby,
Welcome to the group. As has already been said, the sharing of each of our experiences enables all of us to better understand our conditions, and the variety of diagnoses. I hope that you benefit from the information and support you will find here.
