hey guys!  Wave

Not sure if this has been suggested before but I found a mod that will allow users to tag people on the forum and they are sent a PM and told about it so they can go into the thread where they are mentioned.

(not sure if this works with 1.8 but i think its possible to configure it to do so.)

Yesterday / earlier when i was mentioned in the compliment's thread I had no idea until I went through and checked unread posts, this would definitely speed up gaining people attention imo.

Hello Bav yes most 1.6 can be changed to work with 1.8

I try to limit the amount of plugins if possible as it save hassle in the future with updates to the software, but I'm always willing to see what others think.

But for me I would say it's not needed, if you look at the Second Left in the green panel when logged-in "View Unread Posts"  it will show you all post you have not read. From there you can decide to read or mark as read.

Plugins put a little extra pressure on resources and increases vulnerability so I'm a little cautious, you did find the post and how often are people mentioned?

I would say it's not worth putting in, but if others think it would make it easier to find when you had been mentioned and you would be happy to receive a PM to say "You have been mentioned in a post" then please let me know and we could look at giving it a trial.

That was my official post, but my personal post is much the same to be honest.

#1 I would soon get fed up with getting PMs whenever any one mentioned me in a post.

#2 I usually go by the "view Unread Posts" and decide what I want to read.

#3 If I make a post about another member and they don't react, it doesn;t bother me as I think they missed it and if it was that important I would PM them and say Look At This.

#4 If we had a huge amount of members posting I could see how it may work but for the amount of mentions of Fred per day I think I will spot them.

As you can tell Bav I'm not keen myself, but thank you for the suggestion and I'm happy to see what others have to say.

I can see some merit in it as people do mention other members in posts for instance I often say something like check out Ccars thread or look at this journal I suppose it might be nice if the person you mentioned were told they had a mention, it may well bring some old members back
For me I would turn it off as I read all the posts each day so don't need the facility

I must admit I've not looked at the plugin that deeply Jim but my understanding of it so far is the you wouldn't be able to mention Ccar or CC you would need to put her full username as [ccarr06] for it to work.

So your mention about Bav that he is talking about in the compliment thread you would have to put his username as [bav101]

And if anyone wanted to use it for you to get a PM they would need to put [jiml] but we all call you Jim.

Kelly would have to go in as [kh924] for it work.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm Night Night I'll see what others have to say.  Sleep

Take my advice; I don't use it anyway.

Well I just read all the new posts so don't think I miss much usually. I think most posts that would need to be read are answers to a question and the name may not be mentioned.

Example: Fred asks about wine
I say I like white wine (but I'm not saying Fred, I like white wine so he wouldn't get a notice)

Bad example but hopefully it made sense.

And if you have to go with username then I don't think it would work as intended. Good idea, not sure how well it would work here though.

I just thought it might be an easy way to draw someone's attention to a thread on the forum, like if someone thought something was important and wanted them to see, granted could just send them a PM asking them to look I just thought it was easier. But yeah some very valid points. Smile

Hi Bav,

Certainly a nice idea and thanks for suggesting it. That first, as ideas are always welcome for thinking about the functionality of the forum.

Thinking about it for myself, I would not want it, simply enough because I don't want all those PM's, I have switched them all off, as certainly now the forum is quite busy I would drown in the messages.
My way of working is looking at the unread posts or the posts of today to keep an eye on what is happening, so I can easily choose what to read. That works fine.
So it may be that I am mentioned somewhere and that I miss that, well that is just a pity. But if it is important I will get a PM. Big Grin

Cheers,
Caroline

OK Bav I've had a better look at it, and I could make an edit to the plug-in to make it work. But I'm not to keen as it was last updated in 2012, and some of the reviews don't sound to promising. I'm not against using old plug-ins and we do have some in use here that I have edited to make them work, but I'm not that good at messing with plug-in codes and if it does cause problems like some of the last comments in the reviews mentioned then it could possibly get thrown in the bin one day when I turn up at my desk and find errors.  Rolleyes

Like Caroline said we welcome suggestions for making Psoriasis Club better for our users, and I'm not saying I won't install it but I'm not convinced it would be used going by past comments. If you or other members could convince me it would get used then I would be willing to try it on my test forum to see how works with the new software.

But remember if we do install it, to make it send a PM to you the person making the post will have to put [bav101] and not Bav. If you have a look at the member list we have some very odd looking usernames and should you want the plugin to work you would need to know the exact username and put it inside [ ] so instead of Jim it will have to be [jiml] a lot of us tend to call some members by other names and not by their full username. [Grizzly Bear] for example is sometimes referred to as Grizzly, Andy, or GB.

Also think of the extra work involved for the server sending out Emails for those that get notifications of PMs, I'm not sure how much difference it would make but my host allows me to send 200 emails per hour this post alone has 4 members mentioned so that's 4 PMs and probably emails as most members have notifications going out for just one post (that is if I remembered to put their proper usernames inside  [ ] in the first place)  91

On a personal note if it was installed I would hate getting PMs telling me I have been mentioned, my inbox is full enough each day without getting more telling me about a post I may have already read. So I would have to make a BBCode to stop people Tagging me, if I do make such code will that cause an error with the plug-in ?

Bav you and other members are welcome to convince me it's worth a try, if enough people want it then I would put it to the vote but with the caveat that there would have to be a way of people opting out of being tagged, and if it caused any problems with errors I would remove it.

Smile

I thought it was a good idea but on thinking about it and in view of what you have said regarding proper user names, I think it will hardly be used if you need to put the name in brackets [Kh924] or [jiml] or [bav101] these are not names that are used in posts, so unless there were a simple way of recognition I can't see it working.
