Hi everyone, I have just joined up to the forum and would like to introduce myself and ask for some advice on various treatments. My name is Murdo, 36 and have been suffering from P since the age of 17. I got a small tattoo aged 17 on my sholder and that was what triggered it off for me. At first the entire tattoo was covered with whte scales and it was no where else on my body. Eventually it started to appear on my body bit by bit and I saw a dermatologist for the first time and he told me it was Plaque Psoriasis. I didn't recieve any treatment for it at the time and it eventually went away and stayed away until I was around 24.

It started to appear on my lower legs, shins, knees and then spread to my arms, elbows and came and went over the next couple of years. The last 10 years has been the worst time for me where my P has been severe and at it's worst, legs, elbows, arms, back and body. I find that a sore throat triggers it off now. I have been prescribed all the creams and ointments available, Dovobet, Dovonex etc... and none of them worked. I have had 2 treatments of UVB light and 1 PUVA, and I have to say they all cleared it but only for a very short time. I have now been prescribed "Fumaderm" but I am a bit cautious about taking it. I live in Ireland and prescription drugs cost the earth, so the price is putting me off for a start, then there is the side effects, I am gong to get back onto my dermotologist and see if he can prescribe me Acitretin, which I believe is cheaper and has the same effect as Fumaderm.  I have also been told about "Dermylex Tablets" which are a natural product.

I am looking for some advice on the various tablets available on prescription and would like to hear from anyone who has used or been prescribed tablets or natural products for Psoriasis. Thanks and I look forward to any feedback.  Smile

Hi Murdo and a big  Welcome  to the forum I have read your introduction and it seems you have been through the protocol of creams and lotions and uv treatment, you will doubtless get a lot of advice on the various treatments from members here, we are a group of sufferers and we all have our ideas of what treatment is the best, you will find us a friendly bunch, never afraid to pass on our experience to you.

You say you have been prescribed Fumaderm it's the drug I am on and have been for over three and a half years and it has truly changed my life. You say you are apprehensive mainly because of cost in Ireland . We have others from Ireland on Fumaderm  and having good results

Won't acetretin be the same cost as Fumaderm ?  Acetretin is a very good drug for treating psoriasis, but if there is no difference in price I would go for the Fumaderm simply because that has worked  so well for me
But I can't knock acetretin because several members here use it and have got good lasting results.
But I will let others tell their story

Have a good look around the health boards you will see many threads on the various treatments available.
And feel free to join in on the off topic board where you can just follow members chat , or join in, we always make new members welcome, there are many topics there to read .

Hi Murdo and welcome!

There are members here on Fumaderm and Acitretin so feel free to ask any questions you may have.

I'm a firm believer that not all treatments are for everyone and some people get better results from different treatments. I'm not sure of your cost in Ireland as I'm in the U.S. Fumaderm wasn't available to me. My dermatologist prescribed me Acitretin and the costs varies but is around $1400 per month (not counting insurance) here. Of course after insurance, the cost is much less.

Acitretin did work for me, it took a few months before seeing any results but once I started to clear my psoriasis cleared up quickly. I'm currently not on medication (other than I do have a prescription topical) There are other members here who also had good results with Acitretin, and also members who have had good results with Fumaderm. You and your doctor will have to decide what is best for you (not just for treatment but costs as well) and go from there but there's lot of info on here about both treatments.

Hi Murdo,

Welcome to the forum.

There are more people at least who use Fumaderm and Acitretin, several with good results.
The success rate of Fumaderm is about 70%.
About the side effects, they vary from person to person, so this means you can have them or you cannot.

Myself I am on Psorinovo, which holds the same active ingredient as Fumaderm, the so called dimethylfumarate. But does not have so much side effects.

Enjoy in the health part but also enjoy in the Off Topic part, where we chat a bit around on different subjects.

cheers,
Caroline

Just been checking and this post may be of interest as it tells the cost of prescriptions in Ireland
RE: Methotrexate or Fumaderm? ccar06 is on Fumaderm and has written her experience so the rest of the thread may also be of interest. But I agree even with the card that's talked about in the post €33 a week is a lot out of normal living expenses

Hello Murdo  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

I can't help much on Fumderm or Acitretin, and I see the others have spoken about them. There are many threads on both if you use the search facility from the menu bar above (third from the right) *You need to be logged-in to use it but it may help.

As for the Dermylex Tablets I wouldn't bother wasting your money, those types of treatments are just going to burn a hole in your pocket in my opinion. If you want to go natural then I would recommend checking out the threads in Natural Treatments For Psoriasis I'm not a big fan of natural treatments but that's because mostly I wouldn't stick to it, I enjoy food and drink to much so it's not for me.

You will hear all sorts of good stuff about things you can buy on the internet, but most of them are nothing more than a few cheap products dressed up to look expensive. With a little bit of work you can find out what is in them, and save yourself a fortune.

Good luck on your choice.

Regards.

Fred.
