It's true that the docs will want you to try creams to begin with but there are quite a few to try and they aren't all steroids, so it's probably worth getting things started down the road to the dermatologist. If you have tried a few things for your GP and they haven't helped you then can push for a referral. They have to put everyone on the same treatment 'pathway' so they can say they have tried things and they didn't work before they move you on to other treatments.
