Hi. I just joined the forum last week.It has been very interesting reading all the different posts. As i said in my introduction i have had this problem for about 32 years. I have only ever had cream, and ointments to put on, and the doctor never ever sugested tablets. It´s only since i came onto this forum, that i ever heard of taking tablets to help with psoriasis.
So first i have seen different tablets been mentioned.Fumarates, Fumaderm, Acitretin, and i think Psorinov. So my question is firstly can i go to my doctor and tell him i want to try one of these tablets, or can he refuse me. By the way i live in the U/K. and the next question is which tablets are the best as it seems everyone is on different medication.

Also as i said in my introduction, i am at present in the Canarie Islands untill the end of June, and i am using Dovonex, But have read to keep out of the sun, while using it, which is quite difficult to say the least.

Hi again karaokeking ( I hope you are a singer with a name like that) you ask about tablets for psoriasis I think it will depend on the severity of your psoriasis or the failure of topicals to clear you....also you mention you are using Dovonex which is a vitamin D derivative and not one of the steroid drugs....
If I was in the Canaries (incidentally the name of my football team) anyway if I were there and was told that a cream I was on to avoid sun I would stop using it and get a good moisturiser " Fred swears by a good quality coconut oil" and get myself into the sun you can get your vitamin D that way and enjoy getting a tan the UV should also help
If you feel you need to move on from creams and lotions towards tablets. I think I'm right in saying you will need to get your doctor to refer you to a dermatologist.
He will be the one who decides the best course of treatment for you.. You can discuss with him/her what you have read about and what you would like to try. You will probably be started on something like methotrexate although more are offering my tablet Fumaderm early
But I think you will need to be refered to a dermatologist in the first instance .. But no harm in asking your doctor.

As far as I know you will have to get prescribed the tablets you mention from a Dermatologist, but like Jim said no harm in asking your GP. (* Psorinovo is not available on prescription in the UK).

As for the others, the following threads will give you more information to arm your self with.

Acitretin

Ciclosporine

Methotrexate

Fumaderm

Hi Jim. You are correct, i do a bit of singing, and i used to front karaoke a few years ago. Like i said i have this Dovonex at the moment, but it seams useless. I got your point about the sun, so i will go and see if i can get some coconut oil.
I was on Dovobet for years, and only resently found out, you are not to use it for long periods, but i have to say it kept it at bay, not completly gone but, i could live with it. Also as i said i can wear bathing trunks, and wear short sleeved shirts so really i suppose i have it very mildly compared to some of the members.

Thanks again for you and Fred, giving me the details of the tablets. I will see my doctor when i get back to the U/K.

Jim. Can you tell me if the coconut oil you get as a sunscreen is alright to use as a moisturizer. I presume i can use that and still go in the sun. I have just been on the net to have a look at the benefits of coconut oil, some of them seemed to be in a solid state, so is all coconut oil the same. Looking on the web it looks like coconut oil is the bees knees. For hair, wrinkles and anti-aging as well. Lets face it we could all do with a bit of that. Thanks again.

I use it all the time it's a great moisturiser and so much more, don't go for the cheap ones they are useless. It's solid when cool and liquid when warm, more information here:  Coconut Oil
