Hi all this is my first post.  Just found this site today and am really enjoying reading the comments posted.  My question to all of you is this:  (sorry ahead of time for the length).
My daughter 22, Sam has recently (since March 2016) developed gutate psoriasis. She has coverage over 80% of her body and is MISERABLE.  My first question is what are the stages this condition goes through?  She was on a topical cream that was  doing very little, but she was going through the large jar of cream very quickly.  She has not had the cream for several weeks and it has come back with a vengence.  She is moisturizing, but nothing else medically and her skin has very little scaling (except her scalp), but the patches are raw and red and hot and painful.  I am at a loss as how to help her and was wondering if this "stage" is a bad sign of worse things to come or just a stage before the scaling starts.  Is there anything naturally we can use right now to shrink some of the sores or is this it for her?  I am worried about her being able to afford medication, biologics etc. when she is too old to be on my insurance, so I was trying to treat this naturally for her pocketbook's sake.  Any suggestions would be welcome.  Thanks again for this site; it is very comforting to know there are other sufferers out there although I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

The stages are difficult to predict as it effects people in different ways. Some only get a small problem and some can get a huge problem, then you also have to throw psoriatic arthritis into the mix. That can come as a shock and ranges from mild to severe. Unfortunately there is no one suit fits all and we all have to find what works for us, the good news is that things are moving on and there is much more in the way of treatments in the pipeline.

The creams rarely last long if it's severe and most do better on an Oral or Bio treatment. But the important thing to remember that it is going to be with her for the rest of her life. It can be managed, but not cured.

As for natural. I'm not a fan myself as it's not something I could do and the evidence from our members of long time remission is lacking. But if she wants to try then this section may help. Natural Treatments For Psoriasis

I'm sure others will have different opinions, but I like to tell it how it is. Sam has a good Mum and well done you for joining us, just shout out somewhere you will find a friendly bunch always willing to help. We know it's difficult for family members as they feel unable to help, and to be honest sometimes you need as much support as us.

Welcome to Psoriasis Club by the way.

Regards.

Fred.

I'm pleased you have found this site you have come to a great place for support and advice, but bear in mind we are not dermatologists, we are all just sufferers like Sam that are here to support one another and pass on our experiences ( don't worry about the length of your post )

I don't know what creams that Sam has been on but I suspect a steroid based cream, but you ask about stages of the disease ......that's a difficult question to answer as it hits us all in different ways...some people  get psoriasis mildly and it never spreads, whereas with others it erupts all over ....
Sadly there is no easy answer, but I would recommend that she visits a dermatologist and get her off the creams on to a systemic drug that will probably help.....but I would also check the natural treatment board here where there are many ideas to help with diet
How I Cured My Psoriasis By Diet is an interesting one for you if you want to try the natural route first

I'm assuming you are from America as you mention cost

Browse the boards and if you have any questions just ask away

And you are right it is an awful disease that is with her for life, but it is manageable and possible to get clear of it ...but it will always be there  Confused  and we are here to offer support

Mary and Sam,

I am going along with Jim in his idea's. If you are already so far with the coverage, you inevitably need to see a dermatologist at least. There are several good systemic treatments (pills) like e.g. Acetretin, that may work. Try to stay away from methotrexate (personal opinion) it is quite toxic and you do not want to start with that at the age of 22 (I made that mistake myself, but it only took me a month to find out that it was not so good for me).
Unfortunately the DMF's are not available at your side of the ocean as far as I know, though Biogen is the producer of Fumaderm.

The biologicals are expensive and can only be covered by insurance.
Over here in the Netherlands they are working with a combination of biologicals and systemics.

And certainly there is the possibility of Natural treatments. See [post= 62294] and the comments of alan540 for that. Natural is quite difficult, but I really think it could work.

And of course very welcome to Psoriasis club. I hope we can be of little help for Sam.

Caroline
