Hi,
This is my first post here. I decided to join this forum to get in touch with other people who have psoriasis. I'm more concerned about some other non-skin related inflammatory effects of psoriasis, e.g. the link between psoriasis and diabetes, fatty liver, high cholesterol, etc. (what is also called the metabolic syndrome). I'm starting to have these symptoms (pre-diabetes and high cholesterol in my case although I'm only slightly overweight) and I believe they are connected with my psoriasis. I've had psoriasis since childhood (for about 35 years now) and I know its external effects are one problem but the other (and potentially much more serious) problem are the internal autoimmune effects of psoriasis. I even read recently (in a German medical journal) that the average lifespan of a person whose psoriasis was diagnosed during childhood is only 59 years which does sound pretty scary...

Hi Jerry and Welcome to the club, you have come to a great place to meet fellow sufferers and exchange views
I’m afraid I can’t help you with your question, although I’m sure you will get replies soon but the boards have gone a bit quiet as it’s midnight here in the uk and a lot of members are European

I hope it’s not true that the lifespan is so short as I was diagnosed at 17 and here I am at 70

Good luck and thanks for joining us Thumb

Jim

Welcome!

And there is indeed a big cohort study from Germany. But it also says that systemic treatment decreases the risk.
There are more studies, the conclusion differ from a loss of 4 years to a loss of 20 years of life expectancy.

It should be a signal that psoriasis needs systemic treatment instead of ointments and creams.

Hello Jerry  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

If you use the Search available to members only you will find a lot of studies about comorbidities in psoriasis patients.

However I don't advise taking them to much to heart. Psoriasis is enough to get you down on it's own, but when you throw in all the other things that we could get it doesn't make good reading.

I say forget about what you could get and worry about it if you do get it. (Death being the exception as you won't worry any more) Life is too short to start thinking you may have something else because of psoriasis. If you are concerned then yes you should get checked out, but enjoy what life you have now, keep the stress levels down, get a good treatment and who knows you could get rid of most of the psoriasis and possibly the chances of comorbidities at the same time.

Regards.

Fred.

Hello Jerry,

Welcome to Psoriasisclub.

Yes, there are comorbidities, but if they are that severe as they are suggesting? I would not know.
If so, it might be like Maryam says, a systemic drug might slow down these comorbidities.

Hi Jerry welcome to the forum, this is a great place to be when you have P and PsA as everyone on here has the problem so knows what it's like and also has great experience in the damn thing so when you ask a question it will be answered as truthfully as possible from a person with knowledge . I read your post and even though I have only had P for nearly 50 years and PsA later on I don't know of anybody dropping like flies from  non-skin related inflammatory effects of psoriasis.Attending many clinics, in hospital three times with it for many weeks I would have certainly noticed because in my time I must have met hundreds of people with P . It's one area I would not stress yourself with as Fred says as there is really not a lot you can do anyway so just enjoy life and live it to the best of your ability .
This site is great ,have a good look around ,ask any questions of the inmates but don't worry to much, Fred does not allow adverts or conmen offering you expensive magic cures so just jump in.

Dave
