Hi Mary yes you should only use the creams sparingly but it seems as if your dermatologist is not helping you very much.
I can understand your reluctance to drugs but as I see it you have two choices
1/ Try to control it with diet the natural way as Alan has done here  How I Cured My Psoriasis By Diet
Or
2/Try drugs they may not affect you badly, the one I'm on had side effects to begin but after a while they calm down and hopefully keep you clear

It's not a nice thing to deal with and it's always difficult to try to get clearance or at least comfortable in my early days with it I grabbed as much sun as I could and that used to keep me clear through the summer
I wish you luck with what ever you do

Hi Mary. Welcome to the club, I can only reiterate what's already been said, have a good look at all the information on here about P because I don't know of any other place that has such a comprehensive amount of it. P is a damm nuisance and you can't cure it but it can be controlled with a bit luck it's a matter of seeing what works best for you.

Take my advice; I don't use it anyway.

Welcome Mary!

There's not much more I can add to what's been said. Some people have had some luck with light therapy, some diet, others with ointments, oral meds, biologics. The good part is there is a lot available. When I first was diagnosed the doctor said they followed a certain formula in prescribing (mostly due to insurance requirements perhaps) which was topicals first, then light therapy, followed by oral meds and lastly biologics. Being in the US insurance can be an issue to some of the treatments, but there are usually different plans available and your doctor's office should be able to assist with that.

I am one who likes to use coconut oil to moisturize and found that it helps (very short term) with itching. No, it didn't cure anything nor even help reverse any effects but it did offer me some temporary relief! I also use an ointment that helps, but I use it sparingly.

There is a ton of info here and people willing to share their experiences, I'd take some of that info to my doctor and ask them about it.

Best of luck and hope you get relief soon!

Hi Mary I think lots of us are on medication for the psoriasis and most start with creams to try to contain it and when these don't work or you have been on them a while and they arent working
We move on to oral tablets (which is where I am at the moment and have been for 7 years ) if they fail then you move to biological injections
Fred gave you links to threads about these in the earlier posts
If you want more more links or advice just shout

Thanks Jim..going to see another dermatologist next week. I have looked into meds online but in the USA the costs are in the 5 thousand dollar range! Who the hell has that kind of money? Not me..lol..I’m interested..where is Norwich..is it close to London? Always wanted to go to England. Tell me about yourself if you want. Appreciate all the advice. Now we have the virus going crazy in New York!

I'm glad you're going to see another dermatologist Mary as I'm sure your other one hasn't done you any favours . I know the meds in the u.s are terribly expensive although if you have insurance you can get some drug companies that have arrangements where you don't have to pay much but I don't know how it works over there
There are cheap drugs you could take for psoriasis like methotrexate or acetretin they are very cheap and although I don't like them myself I found methotrexate effective at controlling the psoriasis

I wouldn't suggest trying it till after this corona virus is sorted out as it lowers your immune system

Norwich is about 100 miles east of London and we are stuck out on the bump on the east of England
See some or my pictures here [Group Specific]
And [Group Specific] you can read about me everywhere on here I'm part of the furniture
Just tap my name at the top and you will see my bio
Corona virus is hitting England pretty bad now and it won't be long before we grind to a halt . I hope you can avoid it I know we over here are being very careful when we are out .
We have a thread about the virus here [Group Specific]
Good luck at the dermatologist next week, fingers crossed you get prescribed something affordable

Hi Mary, welcome to the club. I hope you get some relief soon. Jim and the others have summed it up pretty well.  I'm on Cosentyx at the moment which is working well, over the years I have been on a range of other treatments from Topicals to UVB therapy, Methotrexate and  Acitretin and then to the Bio's. you can see my journeys  here; [Group Specific] and [Group Specific]

Hi Mary,

I hope Kat can step in. She is also from the US and she can have some hints about how to access a program in which medication at your side becomes affordable.

But as jim says, do the research on this for now, and perhaps you can try something after the corona virus has been contained.

Cheers,
Caroline
