Hello! I'm really happy to be here as this is all new to me.

A bit about myself... My name is Kathy (Kat for short) and I live in the U.S. in the state of Georgia. A bit over a year ago, my ears started to get red, itchy, scaly and I had no clue as to why so I just moisturized (which didn't help much.) After a couple of months, I had a visit with a doctor for a test and showed the nurse my ears and she recommended an over the counter cream... which as you can probably figure, didn't help either. A few months after that, I had a visit with my regular doctor and told him what was going on and also that I had a spot on my upper back and on my neck and he gave me a prescription cream..... which of course didn't help either. So on my follow up visit, 4 months later, he sent me to a dermatologist. By then it had started on my scalp and the doc took one look and said psoriasis. Initially, I was simply thinking, good, now maybe someone can fix it! So when he explained that psoriasis is "no cure" I thought... WHAT? I had heard of psoriasis, but thought it was such that you'd apply a cream and it would be gone. But, ok, so they have treatments, that won't be so bad, right? /sigh I had no understanding at all. Anyway, my first dermatologist visit was about 4 months ago and he prescribed a topical - Fluocinolone Acetonide Scalp Oil. Along with an antibiotic because I had a staph infection. So, I start using the messy oil. Over the past months, the psoriasis has came out on my face, neck, ears, back, elbows, knees and stomach. The oil helped somewhat with the itchiness but oh my, the scalp psoriasis is just horrible. I want to scratch myself to death and I leave a trail behind due to the scaling. So, back to the dermatologist I went and he put me on Acitretin (took the first one today as the pharmacy had to order it) and UVB light therapy (did the first session of 20 seconds on Friday, with three scheduled this next week and to continue at 3 per week until....they say everyone is different so no clue how many I'll need) so hopefully something helps.

So as you can see, I probably don't have a lot of helpful stuff to share on what has worked for me, but hopefully that changes with these treatments I've just started. I'm looking forward to reading through the forums and learning more as well as just chatting with people who understand.

Hi kat
A big Welcome to the forum I hope you enjoy your time here as you will find we are just a small friendly group of people all with psoriasis in common, here we tend to support each other through the bad times and when the times are better we venture into the off topic section where it's a lot less serious

I hope your light treatment and acetretin work for you I'm sure they will, it would be good to hear your experiences in further posts
I wish you good luck and many visits back here

Hello Kat Welcome to Psoriasis Club

Good intro, and sounds like a classic diagnoses. It always takes them ages to fiddle around and as soon as a dermatologist sees you they go "Psoriasis"

Yes your dermatologist is right "There is no cure" Some will argue that but the evidence against a cure is overwhelming. What we can do however is lean to live with it, and this is what your dermatologist will play around with to find what is best for you.

Micky started a thread a while ago you may be interested in: Acitretin

Please feel free to start your own thread about your treatment here: Prescribed Treatments For Psoriasis as you could help others.

Mmmmmm chatting with people who understand, you've come to the right place and you will always find some rubbish interesting topics here: [Group Specific] I'm the only sensible one in there and look forward to chatting with you sometime.

Regards.

Fred.

Thank you for the welcome! I've spent most of the morning browsing the forums. Tons of info! Big Grin

I'll certainly post how my treatments are going. It sounds like it will be a couple of weeks at the earliest before I may notice any improvement.

Thanks Fred! I've read the acitretin thread already. I'll start a post about treatment and hopefully share good news about it down the road.

As for you being the sensible one, ok...I'll believe you (even though I've been reading this forum all morning and not sure everyone was in agreement with you on that Tongue)

Thank you for letting me join this community. This has been the best place for information that is all in one place that I've found and everyone seems quite nice.

I try to get them to agree but I usually fail. Big Grin

Hello Kathy,

Welcome on the forum.
Seems you are kind of a 'starter' on psoriasis, at least that gives the opportunity to follow some treatments like the light therapy that may help for you.
There are a lot of other treatments.

The Acitretin stuff does not seem so good for you. You say nothing about your age or children, but I guess you should take care.

Enjoy yourself over here, I guess you are quite smart as you have figured out the status of sensibility of some people over here on the forum. Smile
When we are not talking or discussing on psoriasis, then we like to have a chat or a drink in the Off-Topic part, and those chats may be a little weird sometimes. But mingle if you like to.

On the Acitretin, well, I'm not crazy about taking it (or any meds for that matter) but I can't get pregnant so there's no concern of that happening. Not due to my age (although I'm not young, I "held" at 29 for years but it's getting to be a bit unbelievable so guess I'll need to move that up to 39 and see if I can get away with that for a few years) I'm 55, but don't tell anybody! shhh

Weird chat?? I'll fit right in!

Thanks for the welcome Caroline! Smile

I'm sure most of us would rather not take the medications, but it's better than the disease

I think it's good for us to have a young 39 year old Whistle on the forum to keep Fred in check
I won't tell anyone your real age your secret is safe with us
