Hello, I am new to all of this, my dermatologist suggested this to me so I have someone to talk to, as right now it feels like I am the only one, as psoriasis is sch a taboo subject. I am 19 years old, and have had psoriasis since i was 14, and I have it quite severly now. There isn't a part of my body that doesn't have patches on it. I'm wondering how other people cope with the pressures of every day life? being a young woman, i feel like i have been stripped of my femininity, and my ability to even feel like a woman. I never wear dresses, or anything that reveals any part of my skin. I feel depressed all of the time, and whenever i see pretty women, who are able to wear what they want and are confident it makes me want to break down. I have a wonderful boyfriend who supports me, but I can't feel confident, even though he tells me he thinks i am beautiful, i don't believe him. i trust him more than anything but there is always a voice in my head telling me he wishes i looked 'normal'. I am so fed up feeling like this and need someone to talk to who knows what it feels like to constantly be uncomfortable in their own skin.

Hello Catherine,

Good Morning ! What a time to post, 3:54 hrs !
But a good decision.
I wish you a warm welcome to this forum. Welcome

At first of course, because we all have the same or alike problems, we don't care how someone looks like. There are many times we don't feel ourselves happy just like you. So we try to give eachother a hug Bigarm and throw our feelings on the forum.
Secondly over here we can also hear and read what others are experiencing and what they are doing about it. Maybe we are not so smooth on the outside, but the insides of every visitor over here is great, that is one thing I can assure you.
Thirdly a word about your boyfriend. If he says he loves you, and that he does not care about your outsides, there is a very big chance that he tells the truth. Simply because love is a strange thing. For the person who loves the other person, he has the possibility to see the whole of the person in one view. He does not see the outside alone, he sees the beauty of the whole. I hope you get what I mean. In that sense love makes absolutely blind.

Well about the forum, there are very serious things on it, nice discussions, thoughts, treatments, etcetera and if you are really looking for distraction you can go to the OffTopic part.
Nothing is there what it seems. If I am feeling down I go there to tease Fred a bit, which mostly turns my mood, or I speed a little bit around or read what other strange stuff is being told over there. Don't think that Fred is the sensible one over there, although he will try to tell you that.
One thing is for sure, I am the fastest!!!

I wish you wisdom, I wish you can relax and I wish you fun on this forum.

Hello Catherine and a big fat Welcome to Psoriasis Club. Nice intro Thumb

What a great dermatologist you have suggesting talking with others. He/She is right, knowing there are others who understand and that you can share with will help immensely. Tell your dermatologist if they would like to point more here, we do have some flyers here: Cards and Flyers We are totally self funded and don't rely on sponsorship or donations, so what you get is all independent from real people.

Psoriasis is not a taboo subject here, and we don't care what you look like! as long as you're friendly you will be made very welcome. I see you have already met the cheekiest fastest forum member Caroline, and she is right, if your boyfriend says he loves you, He does. Plus you are in a relationship at a young age with someone who will support you, believe me that is a huge asset to have. When I opened the new forum I asked Mrs Fred to put a few words from the other side, your boyfriend may find it worth a read. See Here: Living with Fred He is also welcome to join us if he wishes.

Catherine, have a good look around the forum and don't be afraid to shout out. We may not have all the answers, but knowing there are others here who you can talk to will give you a huge lift on coping with psoriasis. Oh and all those Pretty Women you see! Don't be fooled everybody has problems of one sort or another, and you have an advantage over them. You already have psoriasis, and it can strike anyone at any time.

Oh hang on a minute.............................Fred goes to the filing cabinet.......................OK here it is. I remember Lady B thanking me for some great ideas for covert sunbathing. it may help you with some ideas for hiding your skin whilst you are out. See Here: Free Psoriasis Treatment and click the Spoiler

P.S I AM the sensible one in Off Topic and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Never be alone, there are others.

Fred.

Covert sunbathing?
But why should you cover yourself if the sunlight is so valuable?
I like going to the beach with as less covered as possible. At a not so crowded place of course, but there are plenty over here.
And I keep on thinking that it helps.

Hello Catherine!
I was going to write a lot of philosophical ponderings and wise words but I'm pretty rubbish at all that so I thought I'd concentrate on the dress issue.
You can wear a dress if you want to! Think leggings or opaque tights for your legs and a little bolero jacket/cardigan for your arms. Or a dress with full or 3/4 length sleeves. And as I have said before one of the best things about winter is woolly tights (although Fred says he can't wear them as they make his legs itch!), pair them with a cheeky denium/cord mini skirt and boots.
If I have to wear more transparent tights I just put a dab of foundation on my psoriasis to tone it down. In truth no body is interested in looking at my legs but I use the foundation on my leg spots for my own confidence - it works for me.
You are young and beautiful and have a caring boyfriend, and you have just joined the most helpful forum on the planet! Things can only get better Smile

Hi hon - I'm new here too, I have a different type of psoriasis, its on my feet & hurts like !"£$$%^!! however, when I was younger I didn't have a lot of confidence, I have thick legs, soooo I have always worn trousers or leggings, I don't do skirts..... however recently I have fallen in love with the long dress's available! great & best of all colourful!!Big GrinBig Grin as I get older I find I can wear more extravagant things, I've discovered Asian bloomers (the big silky trousers) I bought an outfit from ebay for £16 its silk & bright pink & the leggings are soooo comfortable & cover up the fact that I have big legs (courtesy of cycling & skiing at your age!!) & I look good in it too! I can;t decide if my depression has caused the psoriasis or the other way round, however I have found its good to let it out - so big hugBigarm be positive (when you feel like it) and do something nice for yourself once in a while & for a real buzz do something nice for someone else!! I love people complementing me (I always have flower hair clips & they get reaction) so as I like being complimented, I compliment others & it surprised me how good it makes me smile when it makes another smile.... now I have not always been like this - I used to be a real misery, until I realised I didn't like myself, so why should i expect others to???? so I took a deep breath & over a period changed - have a smile, it makes others wonder what you've been up to.....Five take care & think pink...
