Hi! My name is Jason and I have had Psoriasis for approximately 6 1/2 years. I was diagnosed with plaque psoriasis in 2007 after having issues with dry, flaking scalp and being convinced it was bad dandruff and going to the Dermatologist. Since that time, and being put on more topicals that can be imagined, it has continued to spead. It is mostly confined to my scalp, but I also have spots pretty much everywhere else. I have a history of autoimmune conditions in my family, with my Mom having RA and I grandfather who had psoriatic (sp?) nails (which I have as well, sadly).

Finally, last week I went to the dermatologist, determined that I would get something that would help. The doctor saw how discouraging my reaction to the topicals was, and put me on the first of what he calls the "Big Guns", Methotrexate. I am taking 5 mg and will be going to 10 mg in two weeks.

I am finally wanting to get serious of knocking this out as best I can, and I want to help others do the same. Thanks again for reading, and hope we can chat soon!

J

Hello Jason,

Welcome to this forum, nice to meet you.
The forum contains lots of personal information of fellow psoriasis suffers. We have tips, discussions, idea's and also an Off Topic section. Be careful in that last one, nothing there is what it seems. Take care with the character called Fred.

There are several threads on MTX, I advise you to search and read them. It will become clear to you that it is a prescription where the thoughts differ quite heavily.

The forum is populated by a nice and sometimes wild bunch of lovely people. We not always agree with eachother but will have respect for eachothers opinions.

Have fun,
Caroline

Hello Jason Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

I'm the one Caroline said to watch out for in the Off Topic board, but you will soon see I'm the only sensible one there.

As for Methotrexate, like Caroline said have a search and you will find both for and against. But to get you going have a look at this thread: Methotrexate and Krissie's thread may also be of interest to you here: Methotrexate... almost 1 year on

I think Krissie is still using it, and Micky has recently stopped using it. They are both willing to share information so don't be afraid to ask.

Regards.

Fred.

Hi Jason and Welcome

As Fred correctly said I am still using Methotrexate but I have found it to be totally useless at clearing my skin. It works wonders for my Psoriatic Arthritis though and I have had no worryingside effects after a year at 10mg per week.

For my skin I am using a UV machine. At the moment it is 50% UVB and 50% UVA but I plan on changing the tubes out to 100% UVB once I buy it from the guy I have borrowed it from.

That is working a treat in combination with dovobet & calcipotriol ointment.

Psoriasis is one of those conditions that acts differently for each person who has it... Not all treatments work for everyone so don't give up searching for the right one for you... I'm still searching after 32 years (but don't get downhearted at that) but have learned to accept my skin and never be ashamed of it.

Krissie

Hi Jason
I don't have experience of MTX but as the others have said there is lots of info here. I hope it works for you and good luck x
