Very frustrating, but maybe there is an underlying concern for you. I am sure you will find out. You could always ask to try the DMF. Has worked a treat for me and others, although I am keen to get my hands on some fish antibiotics from Thailand to see whether I can knock down the arthritis a bit more still.

< Finally, coadministration of folic acid has been shown to decrease the frequency of serum enzyme elevations and now is commonly used.

Long term therapy with methotrexate has been associated with development of fatty liver and hepatic fibrosis and, in rare instances, portal hypertension and symptomatic cirrhosis. Symptoms are usually absent until cirrhosis is present, and liver tests are typically normal or minimally and transiently elevated. Routine monitoring of patients with regular liver biopsies done at 1 to 2 year intervals or with cumulative methotrexate doses of 1 to 10 grams demonstrates that approximately 30% of patients develop mild-to-moderate histological abnormalities (fat, cellular unrest, mild inflammation, nuclear atypical) and 2 to 20% of patients develop some degree of hepatic fibrosis. Well documented cases of cirrhosis arising during long term methotrexate therapy have been reported, but cirrhosis is rare in prospective series, even with routine histological monitoring. Patients who develop fibrosis on long term methotrexate therapy often have other risk factors for fatty liver disease, including excessive alcohol use, obesity, diabetes and concurrent administration of other potentially hepatotoxic agents.>

Cheers,

Bill

OK first thing first what is DMF?

I think the first thing I want to do is get back to where I was with MTX as P has really started to show and I will get really annoyed if the NHS start £&%$ing me about again after doing so for so many years.

Then I can discuss more rationally about less toxic alternatives which is probably long term what I really need to do.

Bill thanks but they are statistics, ie 30% do means 70% don't etc. Plus most of it I don't actually understand, I have P I am not a doctor.

Unfortunately I cannot source MTX in the UK to enhance my dose if they insist on 5mg otherwise I think I would. Yes I know it needs monitoring but to get back on the road again I don't see the point of this consultants strategy.

Apologies I will probably be less frustrated later in the week.

Just so you all know all of your data is available anyway! In theory. Even your Apple isn't as secure as you think as the data will exist elsewhere and can be intercepted in transit if they really want to. Just don't do something that makes them want to!

Pingu, the version of dmf you can get on the NHS is the treatment I am on Fumaderm, it is by far the best treatment I have ever been on, I have been on it for over 4 years now and am enjoying life to the full .

Bill in Australia uses raw dmf and weighs out his own doses, very successfully ( not recommended unless you know what you are doing )

Caroline uses Psorinovo which is pure dmf ( not available on the NHS ) but can use higher doses

Fumaderm has been in use in Germany for around 30 years I think and has a 70% success rate

Fumaderm was not even mentioned when I had my private consult or at the NHS. IIn fact the NHS consultant did not even mention alternatives.

I can't recall which three treatments the private consultant suggested but I know I chose MTX as it was 80% success rate.

I need to look into Fumaderm to see if it could be something I want to try in the future.

I guess it is a case of if it is safer why are they not recommending it? Do you need bloods etc done with it as well.

Yes it is safer , it's not been approved in this country but many hospitals are prescribing it. To my mind it's far safer than methotrexate , yes you need blood monitoring to keep an eye on things , but after the initial side effects die down it is a brilliant drug

Ah! Initial side effects! Which would be hopefully unbelievably attractive to the opposite sex, the strength of a lion and developing the body of a Greek God!

Yes Pingu you've nailed it in one 85 body of a Greek statue and women fall at my feet 85  Snigger

Actual side effects can be abdominal cramps I had them for around 30 minutes a day some time after taking my tablets
Also hot flushing .... Not unpleasant but I get none of that now and am on a reduced dose keeping it under control, I feel great, am full of energy. I hope I never have to come off it

You can read of my experience here [Group Specific]
Also ccar's journal is worth a read [Group Specific]
Fumaderm is not always easy but worthwhile if you can tolerate the side effects that don't affect everyone
