The feeling when you hear you can't just take something to cure psoriasis is pretty horrible at first but it does pass, and when you get on top of your symptoms and/ or get used to having it you should find it recedes into the background of life.
Steroid creams can be very effective, you have to use them properly though and not skip days. They are usually used for a couple of weeks, and you taper off at the end rather than stopping abruptly, all under guidance from the doctor. There's also lots of other treatments to try.
Try not to panic about your diagnosis, and though it sounds like you've gone in at the deep end with a bad outbreak, you will most likely also have long stretches where it's calmer and doesn't bother you nearly so much or at all.
