I am a retired Science Teacher and I have plaque psoriasis. My old Army buddy is a retired Orthopedic Surgeon. We both suffer from Osteoarthritis in the knees. He suggested that I try a prescription topical anti-inflammatory treatment named PENNSAID that he had had good results from. I did, and also found a great deal of relief from knee pain. The problem for me was that the prescription was not covered by my insurance plan and the out-of-pocket cost was hideously expensive.

Stay with me. I'm getting to the good part.

We noticed that the two active ingredients of PENNSAID are Diclofenac Sodium and DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide). We did some research and discovered that another prescription topical gel named VOLTAREN is nothing more than Diclofenac Sodium and is rather cheap at $20 per tube. We also found that DMSO in gel form is cheap and readily available at any tack shop (those stores that sell horse and equestrian equipment), where it's sold as a horse liniment.

We both began using VOLTAREN and DMSO mixed half-and-half and had the same pain relief as we'd had with PENNSAID at much less than a tenth the cost.

Now the good part:

My plaque psoriasis is on the top of my left foot. Covered with a sock and shoe it itched constantly. I have been to several dermatologists and I have tried everything except the systemic medications.

Out of desperation, I began treating my plaque psoriasis with the same mixture of VOLTAREN and DMSO I've been using on my knees and IT HAS DISAPPEARED! I have been in remission for four months, now, plaque- and itch-free.

I am not suggesting that this is a cure, and I am not suggesting that you try it yourself before consulting with a physician. I am suggesting that you and your physician both read the cautionary notes on PENNSAID, and that you apply the mixture as instructed on the PENNSAID website. You will need a prescription for the VOLTAREN, but not for the DMSO. If you can't find a local tack shop, you can find DMSO for sale on Amazon. Buy the small jar of DMSO in gel form. I apply the VOLTAREN first, enough to cover the plaque, and then apply about the same amount of DMSO. Luckily, my German wife can buy double-strength VOLTAREN FORTE over-the-counter in Germany and bring home a few tubes for me. It's possible that you may also be able to buy VOLTAREN on Amazon, but use caution if you don't trust the supplier.

Thanks. I'm hoping for responses from plaque psoriasis victims who are actually willing to try VOLTAREN and DMSO, and who are tired of dermatologists and pharmaceutical companies profiting from our distress.

Please feel free to repost any of my posts to possibly more appropriate threads. I am new to the forum, but will respond to all questions. I'd like this information to go viral in both the psoriasis and osteoarthritis communities.

Take my advice; I don't use it anyway.

Welcome Christopher!

Interesting information as I have plaque psoriasis and also osteoarthritis. Anti inflammatories and pt for the osteo, which helps but not enough. It's been a long day so I'm going to reread your info tomorrow but wanted to say hello.

Thanks, Kat. The DMSO also has anti-inflammatory properties, but has the added benefit being able to dissolve and carry the NSAID in VOLTAREN transdermally, down through the skin, to the source of the inflammation.

Hello Christopher  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

I've just checked drug interactions with Pennsaid, and there was nothing with dimethyl sulfoxide.

But there is a Moderate warning of using Pennsaid and Volteran together, so it may be worth you watching for the following.

Quote:
Interaction Moderate: Voltaren (diclofenac), Pennsaid (diclofenac topical)

Talk to your doctor before using diclofenac topical together with diclofenac. Both of these medications are considered nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Since the medication in diclofenac topical may be absorbed from the skin, combining it with diclofenac may increase the risk and/or severity of side effects reported with this class of drugs, including stomach ulcer, fluid retention, high blood pressure, bleeding, and liver or kidney problems.

Regards.

Fred.

I'm sorry, Fred. I thought I'd explained it pretty well, but I'll try to put it in simpler terms.

1) PENNSAID is a combination of Diclofenac Sodium and DMSO.

2) I NEVER use PENNSAID because it's TOO DAMNED EXPENSIVE!

3) INSTEAD of PENNSAID, and at a much lower cost, I use a combination of VOLTAREN and DMSO, sold in separate containers, applied topically to the affected areas. It works EXACTLY THE SAME as PENNSAID, and has reduced the inflammation and pain in my arthritic knees, and it has ALSO CLEARED UP MY PLAQUE PSORIASIS.

4) I have had no harmful side affects from the topical use of VOLTAREN and DMSO.

5) I NEVER use either oral or injected NSAIDs or psoriasis medications.

6) VOLTAREN and DMSO are for topical use only. Do not ingest or inject them. Keep them away from mucus membranes and wash your hands after use.

Also, Fred, I believe your 'quote' was in reference to the use of VOLTAREN, which is topically applied Diclofenac Sodium, in combination with Diclofenac pills, which are taken orally and affect the whole body.

OK Christopher.

Would you mind if I respectfully ask that you refrain from using all capital letters in your reply to me, as I take it as a form of shouting on a forum.

Thank you

Fred.
