After I was told I had psoriasis I was given all different types creams on a try this one systems. I was then given methrotrexate . I was on it for nearly 2 years when my doctor at the hospital told me to stop taking methrotrexate and I had to go for a liver biopsy which was very painful, I was told that the methrotrexate had scared my liver. I was then put onto Acitretin 2x 10 mg caps for about 2 to 3 years then it was increased to25mg caps but that made me I'll so it was put back to 2x10 mg caps which I am still on.I still have my palms and the soles of my feet pealing but rest of my body is almost clear. My advice to anybody on methrotrexate to keep having your blood tested at regular times.

Hello Anthony  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

I will move your post to a new thread in Introductions as you had posted in Help using the forum and it wouldn't get much notice there.

Good advice about getting regular blood checks on Methotrexate. This applies to all Oral and Bio treatments.

If you need any help finding your way around the forum just shout and someone will find you.

Regards.

Hi Anthony and welcome to the Club Wave and more importantly the Acitretin Clan
Sadly its one of those nasty side effects MTX can have and as you have already found out Acitretin also has its fair share of issues.

Acitretin is my first oral, I started off on 25mg, went up to 30mg to try to boost the clearing but as with yourself the side effects were a little too much, peeling hand and feet, lips as dry as the Sahara and thinning hair. So they dropped me back down to 25mg. I had to stop after a string of persistant headaches. Fortunately I didn't get the dreaded rebound flare, but the Ps did start to return. After some discussion as my options are limited due to other ongoing medical issues, we came to the conclusion that it was probably best to go on a low dose of Acitretin, so I'm back on 10mg a day.

Keep up with the bloods, they are just as important with Acitretin as most other Psoriasis Meds.

Any questions or if you need to unload just yell, there is nearly always somebody lurking. Dont forget the Off Topic section for a little light entertainment.

Hi Anthony and  Welcome to the club .... great introduction and yes blood tests are very important on methotrexate I hope your liver recovers well
I hope the lower dose of acetretin keeps your skin clear.... I don't like the sound of the side effects of acetretin they seem fairly harsh, I hope they lessen with the lower dose and you stay clear long term

Hi Anthony, welcome to the forum.
Everyone is different and have results and side effects to everything that is on offer for P. I was on MTX for over 15 years before the side effects got to me which was all stomach problems and all my bloods were still OK.
The Acitretin that you are on caused me ingrowing nails , hair loss and very dry itchy skin but now I am on Stelara the side effects are virtually nil. Have a good look around because what you have here is the most comprehensive information on P and PsA that you will find with nobody trying to push magic rubbish that does not work but cost a lot. The inmates are all barmy but friendly and will answer any question with answers from experience not like most other health so called professionals.
Dave
