I've had a flare up, mostly ears and neck, few spots here and there.  I did buy an over the counter tar shampoo, didn't really help and I have problems with how those shampoos really seem to dry out my hair.  Anyway, other than breaking down and trying the shampoo, I saved my money on the over the counter stuff as I've already been there/done that.  The ONLY relief I got while waiting to see my doctor was virgin coconut oil.

I took two bowls and filled the bottom one with hot but not quite boiling water.  I then put a bit of coconut oil in a smaller bowl and set in inside the bowl with the water.  This dissolved the oil into a liquid form (plus made it a bit warm which I found soothing)

I then used a cotton ball to dab the oil on.  I found this worked better for me than rubbing it on.  This helped a lot when the scaling was dry and crusted.  It softens the scales and even helped with the itchiness for a small amount of time.  It's not a miracle thing..... but wanted to mention how I used it and how it helped offer me some small amount of relief.

I always found that coconut oil was very good Kat , I use a shampoo now with a conditioner in it as well ,Capasal, and it does not dry it out, or it appears not to do.
Hope you are well Kat .

I'm a big fan of coconut oil and use it every day. I like your idea of dabbing it on as a liquid, but I prefer it hard and let it melt as I rub it in.

My top tip would be to always buy a good quality virgin oil and never use refined.

I hope you don't mind Kat but I made an edit to your subject content as we already have Coconut Oil and I think you have given a good tip here so I renamed it "Coconut oil tips for psoriasis" if you prefer something else please let me know.

The edit is perfectly fine Fred.

I found that melting it helped with applying in on the scales and like I said I really liked the warmth, it was soothing. I could still rub the oil into my scalp. I had always used it straight from the jar, which works well but thought I'd give melting it a try and was really happy with the results.

Dave, I also use a shampoo and conditioner with coconut oil which I love. It helps a bit with moisturizing but as bad as things got I decided to try the tar shampoo, didn't help though. I'm hanging in there, hope you and your family are doing well Dave!

Actually you have given me a thought.

I wonder if you could put it in a syringe (without needle obviously) and get it directly on the psoriasis under the hair. When I once had a lot of hair it was so difficult getting stuff in the right place.

That could possible work!  It's not super thick, actually when melted if I apply it too much it will run a bit but not too bad.  I found that saturating a cotton ball worked well to apply to scalp though I like your idea.

Luckily for me I no longer have scalp psoriasis so it's not something I could try. Then again I don't have much hair these days either. Big Grin

Good advice though! If I do another coconut oil application I'll give it a try. I have some syringes from Riley's monthly shots I could try using.

If you are using it warm KAT make sure that after you have cooked with it you let it cool down. Big Grin
Hope you are all keeping well, Clare has an emergency operation coming up next week so we are going from one crisis to another.

There is so much helpful information in this psoriasisclub!  Thank you!  Thank you!  I'm going shopping for virgin, unrefined coconut oil today.
