Hello!

I have been lurking around here for quite some time so I figured I'd introduce myself.

I'm 24 and live in the great state of Wisconsin. I have had scalp psoriasis for about 3 years now. Currently it covers about 40% of my head as well as around my ears. I saw a dermatologist about 2 years back who prescribed me Clobox. This cleared me up while I applied it regularly but I eventually discontinued using it about a year back because I read about the harmful side affects of prolonged use of topical steroids. I am still using another prescription called Protopic around my ears. I actually have not seen anyone on this site that has used it but after reading up on it a bit I found out that it is sort of a new drug on the market and has been prescribed for many different skin conditions. I use a small amount about 3-4 times a week before I go to bed and notice that the scaling/ redness around my ears goes away but comes back if I don't use it for a few days. As for my scalp, I use a coal tar shampoo twice a week and an organic tea tree/ peppermint oil shampoo the rest of the time (from Trader Joes, such an awesome store!). I also have been recently been using baking soda mixed with the shampoo and have noticed that I don't scale as much (if at all). The redness is still there, but it seems to help with the itching as well. Sometimes it helps with the raised edges but notice that I'll still flair up if I'm stressed out. I am planning on seeing another Dermatologist sometime soon (now that I am on my own insurance) and was wondering what some of you have to say about a first time consultation. What have you done to work with your doctor to get the best results at treating your psoriasis?

Now on to the fun stuff.

I am an avid disc golfer, weight lifter, runner and bass player. I like to stay active and try to keep positive although psoriasis sometimes makes me a bit self conscious. I used to hate getting haircuts but I have found a place that I feel comfortable at. I usually talk about psoriasis with them and how I'm working on treating it and have started to realize that people who cut hair have seen everything under the sun when it comes to scalp and hair health.

That's me in a nutshell, I'm really happy to find a forum like this that is so welcoming and has so much knowledge to share with those of use that are still learning! Thumb

Hi Eric and a warm Welcome into the club. I am glad you have decided to post on here. As you have already found from reading other posts, we are a small active friendly bunch of people with psoriasis all trying to keep it under control, the members are all very supportive and always ready to give and receive support and discuss our various treatments. There is a wealth of information on here and there are no annoying ads of external links. This is Fred's policy and it makes the site easy and safe to use

Protopic is not a treatment I am familiar with but I'm sure Fred will enlighten us about it.

The fun stuff
Nice to hear you stay active with Disc golf and other activities, and I understand you being self conscious. I think we have all been there. I still dread getting my haircut, and I am fairly clear at the moment.
So glad you took the plunge I am sure from your introduction that you will enjoy Fred's club

Venture into the off topic there things are generally light hearted and there is something for everyone there Big Grin Stay positive it's the way foreword and helps a lot Thumb

Hello Eric Welcome to Psoriasis Club

First off well done for plucking up the courage to introduce yourself, it can be a bit difficult sometimes wondering if you will be made welcome. But by lurking around I'm sure as you stated in your post we are welcoming to genuine people with psoriasis.

Re Protopic: I don't know of any members that have used it, and what I know of it it's usually prescribed for Eczema hence the reason you may not have seen it mentioned on Psoriasis Club.

To be honest I don't think it's what you need as it's not designed for long term use, and you should avoid natural or artificial sunlight (sun lamps or tanning beds) whilst using it. And Sunshine is about the best treatment you can get for Psoriasis Cool

Yes certainly go and see your dermatologist again especially now you have insurance, unfortunately you have left it a long while since your last visit and they will probably want to start all over again. But don't worry about it all is not lost, they will work with you to find what's best.

I would say do a bit more LURKING Reading and don't hesitate to ask on other's threads if you think it's something that may help, arm your self with as much information as possible, have a look at these threads as they will probably use them.
What is the PASI score my dermatologist uses ?
Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI)

I don't always recommend this, but it may help to leave the psoriasis alone and not treat it with anything for a few weeks before you go to your dermatologist. The worse it looks the more they will act Wink

Good luck and keep us informed.

Regards.

Fred.

Hello Eric,

Welcome to the forum.
As you have been lurking around a bit already, you must already have a clue of who we are. Kind of a bunch of very different people, with the same types of problems and a variety of solutions.

Hope you have a good time over here with us.

cheers.

I have used Protopic in the past. It's topological that is typically used for eczema or long term treatment for facial or genital psoriasis. It didn't do much for me and I had an adverse reaction to it. Also, it's costly for such a small tube.

It's not safe to use a corticosteroids cream around the eyes our in the ears. That's why they gave you the Protopic, it's safe there

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

So here's a little update from me. I have a dermatologist appointment scheduled for Wednesday this week. I think what I am going to do before is make a complete list of not only prescriptions I have used but also the home remedies I have tried. I won't use anything on my head for the next couple days either. I had a flare up last week too (work, stress, etc.). I'm really optimistic that I can start get my skin looking better!

Hi Eric
Thanks for the update good news you are getting to see a dermatologist.
I would tell them that you have been reading up on psoriasis and you are unhappy with the side effects of the topical steroids and they are only treating the skin
I would ask about the various things you have read about on here like methotrexate, or Stelara , I don't think my treatment is available in the U.S. But I would mention it to them.
If you go in knowing what you want they are more likely to listen to you and not just fob you off with more steroid ointments.
Great idea leaving off treatment before you go, so you will have something to show them Thumb

I'm glad you are optimistic about your skin, I am also sure you will find a solution as there are many good treatments out there it's just a matter of finding the one that suits you. Just keep hounding them until you are sorted Thumb

If you are interested in systematic treatment, I would suggest doing your research first. Google Methotrexate, Cyclosporin, Soritane, Cellcept, and the biologics (Enbrel, Humira, and Stelara). All have risks associated with them. Localized psoriasis, hands and face, is difficult to treat. You may have to use a combination of systemic and topological drugs to clear.

Not to forget dimetylfumarates, which is under growing interest in the states and has been proven as effective for over 20 years over here in Europe.
The fact that it is sold for much too expensive at your side is very sad, and should politically be put right. To my opinion industry is cheating heavily on this one.

Hello again Eric thanks for coming back to update, I may be wrong but I don't think you would get something like Stelara or any of the Bio's come to that as you will probably need to fail on other things first.

I would say have a read through the top threads on Prescribed Treatments For Psoriasis which gives a lot of info on the mostly used treatments, Caroline also has more on her treatment there but I don't think it will be available to you.

Have a good read through the top 7 threads there and arm yourself with as much information as possible, and most importantly remember it's your body and you should only take what your happy with taking.

Good luck with you appointment, and don't forget you're welcome to start a new thread in Prescribed Treatments For Psoriasis to share with others. Thumb
