Treatment: Currently with creams, awaiting appointment for Acitretin

I just thought I would introduce myself.
I have had PPP for donkeys years and apart from a brief sojourn to the specialist some 20 years ago have always just put cream on to moisturise and just got on with life.  Over the last few years however, having got divorced and then found happiness together with lots of old family stresses and deaths etc. suddenly kerblam major breakout!  Instead of just a little on one foot I now have it majorly on both.  Slightest little bit of stress sets it off.  Am currently under specialist and having had light treatment and various creams I have now been told I need to get on Acitretin, which to be frank, scares me to death!

Back on 6th December I last visited and was told I would be recalled in 4 to 6 weeks.  I had to have all the bloods taken in readiness ........... I am still waiting to see him and haven't even had an appointment yet!  I am still using steroid cream which he wants me to get off but when I do it flares up immediately.  I am not a happy bunny with it all.  But hey, I am also patient and will just wait; ringing occasionally of course to find out that they "have not forgotten me" lol.

So I have lots of questions, which will not doubt come out over time.  I have joined this forum because I thought I was the only person who suffers with this thing!  Everything is usually just down to me right! How wonderful to find that I am not alone in it.  (although I would prefer it if no one had it or that they find a cure!)

I look forward to chatting over time.

Hi Soosie and welcome!

I know what you mean about being scared of Acitretin! The main thing with it is that you do not plan on getting pregnant in the next few years. I was on Acitretin, UV and topicals (steroid oils) and have to admit, it put me on the road to clearing. I didn't have any side effects really on Acitretin (I did feel that my hair thinned a bit, but honestly my hair has thinned a little with age so I'm not sure if that's the Acitretin or me being paranoid.) I'm also leery of the steroid topicals, so I used them sparingly but I have to admit they helped. My dermatologist is letting me try now just using topicals (and sunshine) so I'm hoping it goes well.

Honestly all meds can be a bit scary when you read up on them. We have a few success stories here with Acitretin (me being one of them) and if you're really put off on using it, perhaps discuss with your doctor as to what other options you have available to you.

I hope you get relief soon!

Hello soosieb99  Welcome to Psoriasis Club.

Yes stress is one of the worst things for psoriasis, but unfortunately we can't always avoid it. But like you said you have now found you are not alone and you will always find someone here who understands, and you have already been helping others in return with your other post RE: SSP or Quit??? so thank you for that.

As for questions just dive one in and shout out, we may not have all the answers but you will certainly get a reply. We have a good mix of friendly people using different types of treatments, but if you do just want a chat away from psoriasis I can recommend the Off Topic board for members only. (I'm often found in there, you can't miss me I'm the sensible one)   Smile

Regards.

Fred.

Hi Soosie its time for me to say a proper  Welcome to the forum. I'm glad you have already joined in on the SSP thread ... Thank you for that it was helpful. I hope you enjoy your time on here

You say going into Acetretin scares you, but to be honest all medication scares me they all have side effects. Some worse than others. Several on here are on acetretin and have had good results, and I hope it works well for you.
You must be monitored and as long as your bloods are good then there's  nothing to worry about
If it fails to work with you ask about my treatment ( but I won't go into that just now you must give acetretin a chance)
I would be impatient and would be on the phone asking for a prescription often let them know it bothers you

I'm glad you found us, and here there is no need to be alone, there is usually someone to talk with ... Even if it's only me  Big Grin
Good luck with the acetretin
Jim

Thanks to all for your warm welcome! You have no idea how much difference it makes being able to talk to people who understand how it all feels.

As of today, still waiting for appointment date! RAAA! So they have until Wednesday and then I will be on the phone again. Hopefully they will get so sick of me ringing that they will do something about it. But I won't hold my breath.

I feel so much more positive about trying Acitretin after all your responses. So will give it a whirl; when the appointment arrives of course.

For info. Currently quite stressed which will of course bring the usual flare up. Awaiting outcome of some tests (this evening) with my partner; one and only daughter 7 months pregnant and having some problems with her staff (she is self employed) which, of course, means I get the stress too - because that is how it works! lol. Elderly parents, one of whom has dementia which is difficult to deal with as you can imagine; and last but not least a stressful job in HR! Whoever said life is a ball clearly was in the psychiatric department somewhere! Tongue Tongue But hey, positivity is the way to go, deal with one thing at a time, if you can.

Hope you are all ok ish!

Thanks for coming back and you certainly have a stressfull life at the moment, and believe me I do know what it means to talk to people that understand the complexities of feelings we as psoriasis sufferers go through with this " rash"
You should feel comfortable on here we all strive to make it as comfortable and easy to chat as possible
There are a couple of people who's threads are worth reading regarding Acetretin and one of the forum helpers Kat click on the name to see her profile
One of her early threads was here Signs of clearing
And another well worth a read is kh924 thread Acitrecin - week 1
Do keep chatting we can't fix life but we can understand
