My skin is 50% affected with psoriasis and my doctor treat me with 2x of 25g of Mtx every 12hrs for 3x then followed by folic acid on the next 6 days. After 3 weeks of treatments my psoriasis totally gone with only white scars remain on my skin. She advise me also to stop using soap and shampoo instead I use VCO as a soap on my skin then not using harsh detergents on my clothes. I stop also using fabric conditioner. I'm really happy about the result then I started to expose my skin to the sun to balance the color of my skin, but after a month a red dot with itchy feeling started to grow again on my skin. I'm worried to take Mtx again although base on my blood test I'm still good with normal readings. In your experience did the Mtx need to take every 1 month to control our skin problem? Sad

I'm not sure of the dose needed, but Yes I would think you will need to take it all the time.

Unfortunately there is no treatment that will get rid of it and you can stop, it's all about finding something that can keep it in check. (As in a regular treatment)

I'm sorry Jerry I'm not fully understanding how you are being treated .....
Am I right in assuming you mean 2x 2.5mg tablets ...is that right every 12 hours ? For 3 days then folic acid for six days .. Am I reading it correctly ...if so its a regime I don't recognise ..

Here we take our methotrexate of whatever dose is prescribed once a week in my case it was 20mg (10small tablets ) it was on a Monday and a folic acid tablet on a Friday ... It is repeated every week

Oh I'm sorry Jiml for confusing you, the prescription of my doctor is 2 tablets of 2.5mg for 3 consecutive 12hrs and on the next day, 1 tablet of folic acid (5mg) for 6 consecutive days. This treament done repeatedly thrice (3 weeks). I think I need to take this session again after 1 month because my skin is starting to produce red dots again but with minimal flakes this time. Thanks a lot.

Thanks Jerry for making that clear to me Thumb
But I'm afraid the bad news is that .... Yes you will probably have to keep taking methotrexate and folic acid.... Or your psoriasis is likely to return Confused

Hi Jerry!

In the UK, you normally take your dose of 4 (or 6 or 8, depending how much you need) every week continuously. You take folic acid at least once a week, and get regular blood tests to check liver ok etc. I was on it over a year, some are on it for many years.

If your skin becomes clear and you decided to give it up, I guess some people don't have a return of psoriasis. My skin never became completely clear on it.

If you decided to come off mtx, you usually stop very gradually, and take fewer tablets each week to minimise the chance of psoriasis returning.

Thank you all for your advises. Hopefully methotrexate don't give me any side effect and may God helps us all.

Good to see you got some positive results on MTX. I started several weeks ago now and my understanding or rather what the consulatant has planned is to stop MTX in a few months and see how I respond.

However I started on a low dose and built up gradually to 8x2.5mg tablets once a week followed by folic acid 2 days later.

I am pretty sure that you would need to take MTX for a little while but still good to see great results for you.

Hope you get it worked out.
